Library Discover Ideas My library Paths Compare Shelves Collections Method

The method

How a book gets in.

This library holds 700 books. Every record in it was resolved against independent bibliographic sources before it was allowed on a shelf, and the result of that check is published on each book’s own page rather than kept behind the scenes.

Three sources, and what each is for

Open Library supplies work identity, subjects, page counts and the cover. Wikidata supplies the publication date of the work as distinct from any particular edition — an entity carrying “edition or translation of” is rejected outright, because a reprint date is not a publication date. English Wikipedia is consulted third, through Infobox book only, and covers many trade and business titles that Wikidata does not.

Where two sources agree within a year, the year is treated as corroborated. Where they disagree, the disagreement is written into the record and shown on the page. Nothing is averaged, and nothing is quietly rounded into a single confident number.

This is not theoretical. Open Library dates Atomic Habits to 2016 on the strength of a stray edition record; the book was published in 2018, which is what Wikidata’s work entity and Wikipedia’s infobox both say. A library built from one source would have shipped the wrong year without ever noticing.

Covers

Book covers are somebody’s artwork. This library does not download, re-host or bulk-collect them. Where a cover is shown it is referenced directly from Open Library’s cover service, which is the use that service documents as permitted. Where no cover is available, or the request fails, the book is drawn instead — a Devmark cover generated from the record itself. No book is ever shown as an empty rectangle, and no cover is ever presented as ours.

Summaries

Devmark summaries are original explanatory writing. They are not copied from the books, not assembled from publisher blurbs, and not rewritten from anyone else’s summaries. They contain no invented quotations, no fabricated statistics and no claims the work does not make. Where a summary has not been written yet, the page says exactly that rather than filling the space.

The library also carries no ratings, no reader counts and no “trending” label, because it has no data that would make any of those true. Featured and collection are editorial decisions, and are described as such.

Why sixteen shelves

Twenty-four subject headings is a filing cabinet. The subjects were merged into twelve shelves that are each large enough to browse and distinct enough to mean something; the finer grain lives in tags, which drive search, filtering and related reading.

Four were added later, in two pairs. The library had no mystery, no gothic and no romance at all, and folding sixty such books into Fiction & Classics would have made one shelf a fifth of the catalogue and buried the canon inside it. Thriller & Suspense and Anime & Manga followed for the same reason: the modern thriller is not Golden Age detection, and manga is not a genre of Fiction & Classics but a form with its own history. A shelf is added when a subject genuinely has nowhere to go, not to make room for a particular book.
